Telematics Infrastructure in Elder Care
By July 1, 2025, all nursing services must be connected to the telematics infrastructure (TI). The goal is to network healthcare stakeholders to ensure a seamless exchange of information. The lead agency for this initiative is gematik, the national agency for digital medicine. Connecting to the telematics infrastructure puts your nursing facility in a position to communicate with doctors, pharmacies, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders in the healthcare system via KIM (Communication in Medical Care) DSGVO-compliant messaging.
Additionally, depending on availability, further medical applications can be utilized including emergency data management (NFDM), electronic medication plans (eMP), and electronic patient records (ePA) or the insured master data management (VSDM). As experts in digitalization within the nursing sector, we support you in preparing and implementing the telematics infrastructure – guiding you safely and competently on your journey towards a fully digitalized nursing service.
Digital Credentials
Overview of Digital Credentials in Healthcare
The Electronic Health Card (eGK) for insured individuals was introduced in 2015 and is gaining importance through the introduction of digital applications within the framework of telematics infrastructure. It adds value for clients, providing security through the storage of emergency data for practitioners, electronic medication plans, and electronic patient records for enhanced patient sovereignty (available since 11/1/2021 for GKV insured).
The “Security Module Card – Type B” (SMC-B) serves to authenticate institutions as actors within the healthcare system and is thus a prerequisite for installing telematics infrastructure in nursing facilities. The “Nursing” supplement (SMC-B Nursing) indicates affiliation to this sector with its specific features. Applications are handled by the Federal Printing Office through D-Trust GmbH.
The Electronic Professional Health ID (eHBA), already in possession by doctors and pharmacists, is used for authenticating an individual and their role within the healthcare system. As part of the expansion of the telematics infrastructure in nursing care, every nursing professional is to receive an eHBA. Applications for this are processed through the Electronic Health Professional Registry (eGBR), which is responsible for verifying professional licenses and ensuring the secure identification of applicants.

The Simple Path to Telematics Infrastructure
We offer nursing services a straightforward path into the telematics infrastructure (TI) with “TI as a Service”. With minimal setup and maintenance effort, encryption is handled through a centrally secured connector via VPN to the local card terminal. This setup ensures that each nursing facility is also independent of TI locations and necessitates a “secure” area for the connector. Due to its security relevance, the connector must be connected via a LAN cable.
